Making Money Tips

As storms, security, and airline cutbacks turn flying into a gladiator sport, marathon traveler Jolie Hunt offers 10 insider tips, from a surprise credit card perk to the only acceptable luggage.

As someone who travels for both business and pleasure, I spent 256 days on the road last year. When I share this stat with friends and acquaintances, I always get the same two questions: "What about your boyfriend?" And, "How are you not fat from all that airplane food?" I practically have a script prepared: A) The boyfriend gets the perks of a global existence, and B) Who eats airplane food?

I love life in transit, because travel, if done right, can be rather pleasurable: books get read, letters get written, deliciously bad rom-coms get watched. I've found that 10 simple rules can make the difference between a pleasant trip and a nightmarish one. Grab your government-issued photo ID and off we go.

1) When it comes to luggage, you want wheels and you want a lot of them. For my money, I think Samsonite Black Label is the way to go. They have fairly stylish choices—with some color, thankfully—and four wheels on their bags, which means you can glide through the airport with your bag (and your dignity) upright.

2) If your plane gets re-routed, be proactive and start working the phones. Twitter recently became the most reliable source of information from airlines and airports. And most high-end credit cards will cover incidental costs to rebook fares and secure hotel rooms, even if your airline doesn’t. American Express Platinum is superb in these dire straits and their concierge service is the gold standard.

3) The '70s are over—no one dresses for air travel anymore. For long flights, a headband is genius. You can sleep for hours and then, with one swift maneuver, you again have a hairstyle. Invest in a travel blanket, preferably cashmere (it can double as a scarf). The Company Store makes great ones that you can personalize, and Ralph Lauren does a fancier version in cable-knit cashmere as part of their travel pack. Finally, footwear that is comfy and easily removable trumps all else. Resist laces and zippers, but don't sacrifice style. My top choices are Puma’s Imani Mesh women’s sneakers (no laces, great colors, oh-so-comfy and stylish) and Prada’s Mesh Ballet Flats.

4) Bring your own food, it saves calories and ensures you’re making smart choices. In addition to grub, I can’t live without Chapstick, tissues, socks, a magazine (or seven), and Kahina Face Serum.

• Clive Irving: 2010’s Unsafe Skies5) If you plan to work mid-air, invest in some Bose Noise Canceling Headphones. They block out all ambient noise and turn your seat into an oasis of silence.

6) Any trans-Atlantic or red-eye flight requires real sleep. Beginners should try melatonin—I’m not sure it works, but the placebo effect may be enough to get your eyes shut. Intermediates, try Tylenol PM. For the advanced, I suggest Ambien or the generic Zolpidem. Resist overuse, though; I only use sleeping aids to survive a long overnight flight or to get into a new time zone, especially in Asia.

7) Always book a car service or taxi ahead when you’re headed to an unknown location. It removes one item from the travel-anxiety equation and allows for minimal payment disruption when dealing with local currencies.

8) Skycaps are worth it not only if you have a lot of baggage, but because oftentimes they get you to the front of the queue, which is worth its weight in gold.

Making Money Job

MeFites, my roommate is a mid-twenties free spirit who is a lovely spirit, generous to a fault, but has very little respect for others' things. When she moved in, I set the tone for our household to be one of sharing; I wanted to frequently share my dinners with her. I made it clear that things I own in common areas are fair game (kitchen stuff, etc). I've specified what is mine, what I choose not to share, what is NOT fair game for her use.

I love this roommate, but since the beginning, there has been major boundary crossing. My things go missing. My food, shampoo, mouthwash, household cleaners get used up. Worst of all, when I can't find things, she turns white and tells me they are at "so-and-so's house" and rushes off to get them.

When she ruined my good towels by using them at the school, she said, "Why do you need good towels anyway?! We're so spoiled in this country!" implying I was being selfish and materialistic. Guilting me for expecting my roommate to exercise normal, healthy respect for others' property.

I've had at least four "boundary clarification" talks with her. I have expressed that while I am happy to let her use my things IN OUR HOME, they are NOT to leave the house without my permission. I have clearly stated, "Hey, I am the one who gets to decide whether you use my belongings. You don't get to decide for me."

After a major episode when she lent my sewing box out to one neighbor and our vacuum to another, I set a tangible boundary to keep my things safe and put a lock on my bedroom door. But she STILL is taking things to the school where she works...things she presumes are "No big deal." My grandmother's rolling pin. My only nice set of dinner napkins (both now ruined or gone.) I've told her the next time I find something missing, rent will go up $50 a month for each missing thing (and that's in addition to her replacing what's gone.)

She offers me her food, to use her clothes or hair products, etc. "any time" which is lovely and generous and selfless...buys little presents, has offered to lend me money, helps and cleans up around the house, etc...and I genuinely like her as a person, but I'm really struggling with how to deal with this. In some ways, I feel like I'm dealing with a stubborn, incorrigible, spoiled teenager.

Please note: right now for various reasons, I cannot ask her to move out, so please help me come up with solutions to the situation I'm presently in.

Since being laid off, I have been seriously underemployed and barely paying the bills. I'm starting a new job next month so this stress will lighten soon, but in the last few months with her using up the little I have, it has been very difficult. Knowing she might be sneaking my shampoo and eating the food I bought for myself has been threatening my sense of well-being. I realize deep mistrust has set in.

I've said and done all the constructive things I can think of. But clearly, she doesn't "get it." Healthy boundaries and grownup considerations.

Can anyone help? I'm at my wit's end.

And it's not fair because he has 35 years to back him up. It's very tempting and an easy thing to just bring back the archives. That challenges me. I find that most difficult. I find it insulting to the house and insulting to myself. For me to take it forward — that is Calvin — to look forward. So for me to look back and just copy something, then I am not doing my job." Making Money Software

Of all the interesting new tech that seems poised to garner a lot of buzz in 2011, near field communication (NFC), is probably the most exciting. If it takes off, it will transform the ways we communicate, share, and make payments with digital devices. This will likely take years to happen, but the groundwork is being laid right now. And RFinity is one of those companies at the forefront.

While Google and Apple are responsible for generating much of the buzz about NFC at the moment, the technology goes far beyond simply having the right type of chip in your mobile device. For example, how do you handle different types of data transfers being made from one device to another? And how to you ensure that they happen as quickly as possible? And most importantly, how do you ensure that they happen securely? Those are the things that RFinity is thinking about.

The company has just raised $4 million from Horizons Ventures in Hong Kong. And the space has gotten so red hot, in fact, that we hear they’re already out raising another round.

And it’s an easy bet for investors to make not only because of the space, but because of where the project originated: The U.S. Department of Energy. Specifically, RFinity was born when a bunch of infrastructure security experts working for the government were assigned to find all the vulnerabilities in cell phones. Through software they came up with, they were able to quite easily eavesdrop, manipulate SMS messages, and even compromise LAN security. Then they set out to figure out a way to stop people from doing those very things. That work led directly to RFinity.

Work originally began in the person-to-person and person-to-vendor sales space by way of mobile applications that route transactions through RFinity’s own secure servers. But now that NFC appears ready, RFinity is making sure they’re ready for it. The idea is that their technology could cut out the middle man here: themselves.

Obviously, the company isn’t going to share all the details on how they secure NFC transfers. But the basic overview is that they verify an incoming NFC signal and ask for a user’s permission before taking any action. Further, if the action is a transaction, it requires a PIN, just as you might do an ATM withdrawal. That’s all pretty standard. But the key is one-time-use transaction codes that RFinity creates on the fly along with complex cryptographic signatures. These ensure that an transaction is secure since it means that every transaction can only happen once. Even if those numbers were intercepted by a hacker, they would be useless beyond the one-time payment.

And even if your phone is lost or stolen, a thief couldn’t do anything without your PIN. And you can remotely shut down your NFC capabilities via RFinity. It’s enough to make me wish I could throw out all my credit cards right now. “Today’s identification and transaction systems are based on what? A magnetic strip on the back of a card, based on a 1950’s technology that relies on a base station to read the information embedded as a series of simple magnetic markers in plastic tape,” writes Josh Jones-Dilworth, who is working with the company to bring them to market.

Again, NFC as a technology is great and potentially game-changing. But the software is still needed to make it actually work. And some of the big guys began realizing that early on as companies like PayPal, Bank of America, and even Subway have been testing out different things with RFinity for some time. In fact, RFinity has actually been doing field tests of the software end of their technology since 2009 in places like Idaho, well before most people in the U.S. had ever thought about NFC.

But now people are starting to care. And soon, they could be caring a lot more. NFC is already built-in to Google’s new Nexus S device — and the company has put out a call for developers to start using the tech. Rumors have the next iteration of the iPhone gaining the technology as well. In other words, I suspect we may be seeing acquisition rumors starting to fly around RFinity in about six months or so. Provided their technology proves up to the NFC challenge, of course.

Silicon Prairie News gives its start-up community a voice

You’ve heard of Silicon Valley, and likely Silicon Alley, but have you heard of Silicon Prairie?

Silicon Prairie is geographically hard to define but it’s there– somewhere between Chicago and Colorado, Dallas and the Dakotas–and it’s getting noticed because of one local news source The Silicon Prairie News.

And the Prairie’s entrepreneurs can thank one man, a native Nebraskan named Jeff Slobotski, who decided he wanted to write about the tech sector. After a few days of writing about California’s burgeoning scene, he decided to refocus his efforts on his own community. Recalling the words of my college professor, if you’re going to be a writer, write about what you know.

Slobotski decided to give his community a voice and that voice goes by the name of Silicon Prairie News. He called on the skills of his then friend, now CTO and co-founder Dusty Davidson, who runs BrightMix, a small, local software company.  In July 2008, Slobotski started blogging as a hobby, interviewing local entrepreneurs on his lunch breaks and publishing stories at night.

In June 2009, Slobotski took on Danny Schreiber full time as SPN’s Managing Editor. Schreiber’s favorite players in the SP scene? Dwolla, a mobile payments service that is giving PayPal a run for its money and RockDex, a start up that is capturing the social metrics of plays on YouTube, LastFM and MySpace for musicians.

The boys had a lot to write about, they just needed people to listen. Slobotski, Davidson and Schreiber decided to throw an event to grab the world’s attention; they called it Big Omaha.

Last year’s Big Omaha was a success with over 550 people from 20 states including Foursquare’s Dennis Crowley, Charity: Water‘s Scott Harrison and Zappo’s Tony Hsieh. SPN was suddenly profitable, making money off of sponsorships and ticket sales from the event. Soon they had local businesses and Omaha’s Chamber of Commerce knocking on their door, asking if they could advertise on SPN. The readers came.

SPN currently has 4 full-time employees, 12 freelance writers and 3600 RSS feed email subscribers. At the end of November, the site averaged 25,000 unique visitors, 45,000 page views, and was growing at 10% a month.

“If it weren’t for Silicon Prairie News, there wouldn’t be a start-up scene in the mid-west. They are our voice. Their existence reinforces our culture.” says Ben Milne, the CEO of Dwolla.

Monday through Friday, expect fresh, daily content focusing on Silicon Prairie entrepreneurs like Dwolla and Hudl, an online coaching application, recently named by Inc. magazine’s 30 under 30. On the weekends, to keep traffic flowing, they’ll repurpose TED Talks or big interviews from other more well-known tech blogs.

“Our first goal is to highlight the story, the angel investors and the entrepreneurs. Our second goal is to tighten, build and connect the community and ecosystem here,” says Slobotski. “There’s value in what we’re doing by reporting on it but our events build communities that get people talking and brainstorming ideas together.”

The overall scene in Silicon Prairie is comprised of a lot of consumer related tech starts up. With the large amount of capital potentially available (read: Berkshire Hathaway and everyone else who is connected to Warren Buffet by one string or another), the scene could be well funded with the right connections.

This coming week, they will launch Silicon Prairie News’ Kansas City bureau, of which Kansan Royce Haynes will be involved. Haynes, like many SPN readers found the site through hearing about Big Omaha on Twitter. “I didn’t expect something of this caliber to take place in Omaha, Nebraska,” he says, “It’s going to be great to now be a part of it and to able to highlight all of the entrepreneurial activity going on in Kansas City.”

Interested in getting in on the Silicon Prairie fun? Save the date for a sweet SPN party Sunday night at SXSWi in March and a Big Omaha style event in Des Moines, Iowa this fall.

As times get tougher, many of us continue to struggle with finances. As salaries decrease or stay the same, costs go higher, especially for vital expenses like food, gas, and insurance. Paying bills becomes an even more demoralizing chore, as income and outgo become more and more unbalanced.

Still, at the same time that we're finding finances harder to manage, we're also finding it even harder to change our spending habits. One of the best ways to get your spending habits under control is to put together a budget.

Keep It Realistic

It's tempting to jump in and start assigning amounts to monthly expenses, basing the numbers of what you think you "should" be paying. However, most of the time you're going to assign unrealistic limits on spending that's technically optional, like entertainment, eating out, and recreational expenses. This isn't to say that you can't successfully cut back on these expenses, but cutting them back to what you think is appropriate will likely prove difficult, frustrating, and possibly lead to premature failure of your plan.

Instead of guessing, take time to gather your info before you start hammering out a realistic budget. Keep track of all your spending for at least three months, categorizing every item, so that you know exactly what your current spending habits are. One good way to do this is to set out a group of shoeboxes, labeled with major categories, and toss your receipts into them at the end of each day. At the end of each month, you can tally the costs in each category and not only see what you're spending, but get a better idea about realistic ways to cut back the amounts in various categories.

Be Flexible

It's important to remember, too, that there are times when, in spite of your best efforts, you'll spend more than you've budgeted for a given month. Emergencies happen. Tires go flat, kids get sick, and appliances break. These unexpected expenses need to be factored in. If you can, set aside a certain amount each month that can go into an emergency fund, so that when you do need to face these emergency needs, you'll be prepared.

Other factors can throw your budget off, as well. If gas prices suddenly soar, as they're wont to do, this budget item will be off from your estimates. Or you might have a particularly busy month shuttling kids from place to place and both burn more gas than expected and also eat out more. Don't beat yourself up over these fluctuations. Either shift your goal for the next month, allocating a bit more money to gas, or find another place where it's easier to cut back. After all, while you'll often spend more than you expected, you're just as likely to spend less than you expected. Being willing to be flexible from month to month will allow you to take these shifts into account.

Whatever method ends up working best for you, the very act of scrutinizing your finances at this level will likely cause your spending patterns to shift. As you become more aware of how and where you overspend, you'll automatically start tallying the dollars in your head, making it easier to keep your spending within reasonable limits.

Don't wait until the first of the month to get started. You can start working with your budget any time. And there's no time like the present, so start tracking those numbers.

In a new spin on the fairy tale "The Three Little Pigs", a Clackamas, Oregon, man is said to have left three live pigs in his home when it was just days away from going into foreclosure. Neighbors say that the man was distraught and angry and hoped that the animals would trash the home. Perhaps the mortgage company was the "Big Bad Wolf?"

This is just one example of something that real estate agents say is becoming increasingly common as the lists of foreclosed homes grow and more Americans feel the flush of desperation. Bargain Network report that foreclosures in Oregon are up 23%, which makes Oregon in the top five states with the most foreclosures.

Shay, a real estate agent who specializes in listing foreclosures for banks, says that she sees this "on a normal basis and you would not believe the things people do. They should be liable for all of the damage they do to these places."

She says that punched holes in the walls are as common as missing fixtures and broken doors and windows.

"These acts of vandalism are fueled by anger and you have to wonder why people do it? What are they thinking? And what happens to them after they break windows, dump paint on carpets or stop up plumbing?"

Who has to deal with the aftermath?

Banks can submit a claim to the original homeowner's insurance company and try to recoup their losses and the insurance company can then choose to come after the original homeowner. Or the lender can just bypass that step and sue the original homeowner and then that angry, frustrated non-home owner can lose everything else they have worked for.

Who gets hurt the most by these acts of desperation are the people who wind up buying the home. Banks sell foreclosed homes "as is", so buyers inherit whatever problems are inside the home or on the property. Many people who consider buying foreclosed homes are first time home buyers themselves. They might be trying to get a little piece of the American dream of home ownership.

As the rate of foreclosures continue to rise, perhaps we'll see a new industry come of age. An industry that has anger management counselors and life coaches, perhaps they will even be hired by the banks at the beginning of foreclosures in an effort to prevent potential destruction?

Making Money

Not making money as a YouTube partner? Here are some tips from YouTube itself

YouTube hosted a live event today to help partners get the most out of their YouTube revenue.

Phil Farhi of YouTube, began the event by telling partners about a few of the new initiatives that YouTube is working on, to help make partners as successful as possible. He started by bringing us through the history of advertising on YouTube.

Phil mentioned that just 3 short years ago, YouTube began using in-video and overlay ads, the first step in monetizing videos. And following the first format of ads, YouTube brought Ad Sense ads, enabling smaller advertisers/customers to get on board, allowing YouTube to capture a broader range of advertisers.

Next came in-Stream Ads (mid and pre-roll ads), a format that was launched about two years ago. YouTube said this has been popular because advertisers will pay more for ads that are similar to the format on TV. At almost the same time, promoted ads were introduced and it was proven to drive traffic to videos that were featured using the ‘promoted video’ format.

A few months ago, a new ad format for partners called TrueView was rolled-out. This format lets users watching a video skip the ad after five seconds. An ad format that YouTube says is less interruptive and doesn’t risk annoying your audience because it gives them the chance to hit stop.

Phil asked the question “ What makes a movie a successful?” Using the movie industry as an analogy, he went on to explain that there are many factors that come into play that make up the overall picture; ticket prices, seats filled, distribution etc. It’s the same with YouTube as he pointed out. Partners shouldn’t look at one aspect such as RPM (revenue per thousand page views) or CPM (cost per thousand, as an example $1 or $5 per thousand views), they should look at everything including geography.

A few points to take away

Good partners focus on overall revenue and aren’t fixated on “ticket price”. They also work hard at building a strong audience as well as trying to increase views. Good partners look at geography, RPM and CPM.

Bad partners look at the wrong metrics and don’t build up their audience. Partners who only focus on RPM might think everything is fine however, it’s critical that users concentrate on CPM as well and continue to build audience loyalty.

YouTube says advertisers are creating content that competes with user content, and millions of users are watching advertisements on the site. Think about the popularity of Superbowl ads.

Keep experimenting! Compare ad formats by type and geography and play around with different scenarios. Try enabling ads after your loyal audience has seen them or try it in reverse. Play with different recipes and see what happens when ad formats are enabled/disabled. There is a wide variety of ways to make revenue.

Take a good look at revenue break downs and compare formats; True View, in-Stream, etc.

Better reporting for ad formats coming soon. YouTube admits that partners don’t have the best reporting feature right now.

YouTube will be adding an option for partners to opt-in to just TrueView Ads without needing to be signed up with other formats.

Ensure the metadata on videos have the correct information and enough words to help YouTube’s algorithm bring the best targeted ads to your videos

There are very few people left in the money making industry online that are honest and can be trusted. Some of the big shots and gurus advertise their own products and make wild promises of making money with their stuff, and more often than not, they fail. The money making world needed a break, And The Light In The Darkness provides it.

The Light In The Darkness is the first system/book/manual that I've come across that actually tells you what it takes to make money online, and what you can achieve if you're diligent. Unlike most other programs today that claim that you can make over a billion dollars in 23.86 seconds by just shelling out the money these people are demanding, The Light In The Darkness tells it as it really is. The promise of the author is simple, and most of what I've learnt and writing about is actually from the book. This is what the author says :

If you are willing to WORK HARD in the first few months, you can easily make over $40,000 at the end of the sixth month. You will have to work and learn in the first few months. None of this will cost you anything, and we'll use the money from your earnings to take you over $40,000 a month.

This is a breath of fresh air on the internet where every other guru is selling another system that will make you a billionaire if you give him the money and click on his link! The program covers a variety of areas of working online, starting with writing for money to generate some captial for you, and going on to everything you can think of! The Light In The Darkness covers:

  1. Writing online to generate an income without spending any money. The Light In The Darkness helps you put some money in your pocket before you start with the other stuff.

  2. Building a website, and marketing affiliate programs with it. This is one of The Light In The Darkness program's strenghts – helping you advertise in a very effective manner.

  3. Advertising your programs using articles (that you're being paid for!).

  4. Adsense optimization/Adbrite or any PPC contextual ad service optimization.

  5. PPC campaigns, Adwords, other PPC engines and how to run them.

  6. Selecting affiliate programs for PPC engines. This is one of the sections of The Light In The Darkness that I thoroughly enjoyed, as it helped me understand why some of my affiliate programs were doing better than others.

  7. How to write good ads for PPC programs.

  8. How to advertise using programs such as Trafficwave, Leadsomatic and so on. The Light In The Darkness gives you the exact step by step details to help you build a very cost-effective advertising program.

  9. The top online money making systems and how to use various services to make incredible amounts of money with them (that takes you to over $40,000 a month – I learnt a whole lot from here!).

  10. How to build an opt-in list and use it effectively. You are shown how to make a page with a sign-up form on it, and how to link it to an autoresponder and how to follow-up with prospects and so on. Very detailed and helpful. The best part that I liked about this was that he even gave me some templates to use to help me get started.

My experience with The Light In The Darkness has been nothing short of delightful! I've used it more than any other program, and I've seen the incredible earnings already starting to happen. The updates keep on coming at a rate of at least 1-2 per week, which means that the author of The Light In The Darkness is keeping up with the task and is pouring out all he can into this.

All in all, if I was to recommend any single program today, I would recommend The Light In The Darkness manual. You know the best part? It each and every aspect that any other $97 course by the “gurus” like Mike Filesame, Cody Moya or any other would, but costs nothing close to them. On an average, a decent fluffy e-book that covers any of the ten topics about costs $47. As such, a fair price of The Light In The Darkness should be $470, right? Well, it costs only $19.95. Yup, it blew me away too! The explanation for this low price was that the point of this book is to help people make money, not to have them get a personal loan to give making money a shot! The Light In The Darkness is easily the best manual I've ever come across on the net. Check it out here.
