personal finance programs

Promoting your home state is one thing but having a personal jet and billing the state $500,000 for iffy travel is a bit much. He's all for cutting social programs in a state that survives due to more federal money than it pays into Washington, but somehow cuts don't apply to him. He has a lifestyle to maintain, economic crisis be damned. It's good to be da' king.

The flight logs obtained by POLITICO indicate that Mississippi has spent more than $500,000 over the past three years on Barbour's air travel. That total does not include security and other logistical costs associated with his trips. And through a quirk in Mississippi law, whenever the governor is out of state, Mississippi must pay the lieutenant governor a salary differential as acting governor.

Barbour has reimbursed the state for a handful of flights, but he has more often scheduled obscure official business to coincide with the business of politics, according to the manifest and logs, which were obtained from the Mississippi Department of Finance and Administration under a Mississippi Public Records Act request by a Democrat who has worked in the state, who provided them to POLITICO.

Critics say the flights suggest that Barbour has continued to live the lifestyle of a highflying lobbyist as he's slashed his state's budget for government services across the board since taking office in 2004.

On Monday, I linked to this op-ed from Tom Esvlin, Vermont's "stimulus czar," lamenting the way the money got spent. "Although I'd like to think Vermont did better than many states, much of the money ended up continuing bloated programs rather than providing a transition to a sustainable future," he wrote. That same day, Brookings' Gary Burtless e-mailed in a rebuttal that's worth quoting at length, as it's a very clear description of where the stimulus funds actually went, and why such a small percentage was directly devoted to building things. So here it is, with some edits for space:

The main problem with that silly op-ed is that it refers to only a small slice of the actual federal spending on stimulus authorized by the Feb. 2009 legislation. So far, the overwhelming share of that stimulus has been devoted to three items: Tax cuts for households; direct benefits to people adversely affected by the severe recession, mostly the unemployed or poor; and fiscal relief to state and local governments. Vermont did not need any "Czar" to receive or administer funds under these programs. The money for them quickly left the U.S. Treasury without any effort on the part of the Czar who penned this highly misleading op-ed piece. People in Vermont *directly* received benefits from the stimulus as: (1) lower federal tax withholding from their paychecks; (2) extended unemployment benefits; (3) premium subsidies so they could maintain their health insurance after they were laid off from a job in which they received health protection; (4) miscellaneous benefits (e.g., for college costs) under one provision or another; and (5) aid from the Treasury that permitted Vermont and its localities to finance their Medicaid and K-12 education programs without hiking taxes or lowering other public spending. The kinds of infrastructure spending for which the WSJ's "Czar" had some responsibility constituted a small percentage of the stimulus the Congress authorized for 2009 and 2010.

In FY 2009 and 2010, the EXPECTED spending on infrastructure and other items for which the Vermont “Czar” may have had partial responsibility accounted for just 11% of anticipated spending under the stimulus legislation. The other 89% had nothing to do with the programs criticized by Vermont’s supposed Czar. Thus, all of his complaints – even if justified – are essentially irrelevant to the programs mainly supported by the stimulus law … at least so far. Obviously, in the years 2011-2019, that kind of stimulus spending would have accounted for a vastly larger share of outlays. But (and perhaps Vermont’s Czar has not kept up with this because he does not read a daily paper) the Congress just passed and the President just signed ANOTHER stimulus program consisting of more than 90% personal and business tax cuts and less than 10% extensions in unemployment benefits. So far as I know, very little additional spending has been authorized for those hated infrastructure / technology investment projects. Below is the CBO’s year-by-year analysis of the spending authorized under the Feb. 2009 stimulus law:

My own private view is that the country would probably have been better off if *MORE* of the original stimulus had been devoted to infrastructure / technology investment (more of it would have been spent on goods and services produced in the U.S. rather than China, East Asia, and Europe). Setting aside that consideration for a minute, what infuriates me about the piece cited in your blog is that it reinforces the very widespread but totally erroneous impression that Congress and the Administration were unaware of the administrative hurdles to fast spending that the “Czar” points out in his op-ed. Those hurdles were understood from the very beginning, which is precisely the reason that infrastructure/technology investment projects constituted such a small percentage of the total package. It is perfectly legitimate to criticize the pace of spending on these projects, but it is utterly deranged to think that the slow rate of spending on the projects constitutes a serious indictment of the spending authorized under the Feb. 2009 stimulus program. Very little of the expected spending under the stimulus program (at least so far) was supposed to be devoted to those projects.

foreclosure statistics

In his book, Thompson's search for the American dream ends at the burned-out husk of a former nightclub, a fitting metaphor for a city that went from the fastest-growing to the most-foreclosed city in America in the space of a year. As our article and its accompanying video document, today more than 80% of Vegas mortgages are underwater, and empty or abandoned home pepper the city.

Sunshine and Stricken Suburbs

Vegas is hardly the only region whose housing sector fed on dreams. In Florida, the third-most foreclosed state, dreams have fed the area's growth ever since Ponce de Leon ventured there in search of the fountain of youth. Our piece from Florida explores a different kind of dream: an uncompleted "Italian resort themed" suburban neighborhood that's now filled with cows. In order to save on taxes in the now-unprofitable real estate venture, the area's developer had the area reclassified as farmland and moved in livestock. As for the people who live there, the swanky neighborhood they signed on for is now a barbed-wire bonanza.

And dreams continue to be deferred across the country. In Modesto, Calif., Todd Lappin documents empty streets, hastily boarded-up windows and stagnant swimming pools in the fourth most foreclosed state. With his images of rusting barbecues, overgrown yards and abandoned homes, Lappin sketches a near-apocalyptic landscape, the scattered leavings of a once-posh suburban development.

Meanwhile, a promising development in Vickery, Ga., has started transforming into a money pit. To the dismay of the area's residents, the bankruptcy of Vickery's developer and rising foreclosures have sent neighborhood fees through the roof, even as property values have tumbled. As the author notes, it's unclear if the bucolic neighborhood will ever recoup its lost property values.

Small-Town Destitution

One doesn't have to travel to a sun-kissed wonderland to find a dream that came crashing down. As David Schepp documents in "The Housing Mess Hits One New York Town Hard," Mount Vernon, a scruffy suburb of New York City has also watched its property values plummet. With a majority African-American and Hispanic populace, the working-class city was heavy targeted by subprime lenders, a factor that helps explain why prices have fallen by 37% across the city and by as much as 72% in some neighborhoods.

...statistics show that despite Countrywide's representations, a much higher percentage of borrowers did not occupy the mortgaged properties:

...Overall, 18.3% of the loans sampled had recalculated LTV ratios of more than 10% higher than was claimed in the offering materials, and 6% of the loans sampled had recalculated LTV ratios of more than 25% higher than what was claimed in the offering circular. This overvaluation affected numerous statistics in the Offering Materials...For instance, the Offerings each made representations about the percent
of loans that had LTVs higher than 90% provide the lender little value
cushion to protect against borrower default and loss upon foreclosure.
However, the AVM indicates that a much higher percentage of the loans
had LTVs higher than 90%
.

The Offerings uniformly represented that none of the Mortgage Loans that collateralized the Certificates had LTV ratios greater than 100 percent, meaning that the size of the loan is greater than the value of the property. (aka: being "underwater") Loans with over 100% LTV afford the lender no equity cushion and leave the lender with inadequate collateral from the outset of a loan. Allstate's analysis has found that, despite Countrywide's representations, a substantial number of Mortgage Loans had LTVs greater than 100%, as follows:

Allstate has also analyzed the weighted average LTV of the Mortgage Loans in each pool and has found that the weighted average LTV was also overstated, because of the overstatement of individual Mortgage Loans within the pools.

All these lies, and much, much more, can be found detailed in the filing below. At the risk of cheeiness, this is just a sampling of the sampling. And it demonstrates as all those who purchased loans from CFC/BofA that were repped to be in order, will find, following sampling or loan by loan analysis, that Brian Moynihan's bank committed acts of fraud after fraud, putting not only itself, but its underwriter counsel at risk time again. In fact, if there was anything remotely close to a working legal system in the US, what happened to Lehman's Repo 105 auditor, E&Y, should promptly befall every single underwriter's counsel which is jointly liable in representing that the data set forth by the underwriter is correct. But just as importantly, it means that of the hundreds of hundreds billions in loans sold by BofA to hapless dimwits, arguably the bulk of it is now subject to putbacks, and is of far worse quality than previously expected. It also means that the GSEs: those infinite receptacles of mortgage biohazard, are lying consistently when representing the state of their own books, which are likely orders of magnitude worse than the monthly status reports will indicate.

This is just starting to get interesting.

The full Allstate filing which is a must read for everyone is presented below.

foreclosure listings

Buce:

Underbelly: The Blogger has Questions: They say the Devil has nine questions. Barry Ritholtz has ten; he poses them to the four guys [Peter Wallison, Keith Hennessey, Bill Thomas and Douglas Holtz-Eakin] who didn't finish their term paper:

  1. From 2001 to 2003, Alan Greenspan took rates down to levels not seen in almost half a century, then kept them there for an unprecedentedly long period. What was the impact of ultra low interest rates on Housing, credit, the bond markets, and derivatives?

  2. How significant were the Ratings Agencies (S&P, Moodys and Fitch) to the collapse? What did their AAA ratings on junk derivatives affect? What about their being paid directly by underwriters for these ratings?

  3. The Commodities Futures Modernization Act of 2000 removed all Derivatives from all oversight, including reserve requirements, exchange listings, and disclosures. What effect did the CFMA have on firms such as AIG, Bear, Lehman, Citi, Bank of America?

  4. Prior to 2004, Investment Houses were limited to 12-to-1 leverage by the SEC’s net capitalization rule. In 2004, the 5 largest investment banks asked for, and received, a full exemption from leverage restrictions (known as the Bear Stearns exemption) These five firms all jacked up their leverage. What impact did this increased leverage have on the crisis?

  5. For seven decades, Glass Steagall separated FDIC insured depository banks from riskier investment houses. Prior to the repeal of Glass Steagall in 1998, the market had regular crashes that did not spill over into the real economy: 1966, 1970, 1974, and most telling of all, 1987. What impact did the repeal of Glass Steagall have on the banking system during the 2008-09 crash?

  6. NonBank Lenders: Most of the sub-prime mortgages were made by unregulated non-bank lenders. They had a ”Lend to securitize” business model, and they sold enormous amounts of subprime loans to Wall Street for this purpose. Primarily located in California, they were also unregulated by both the Federal Reserve and the California State legislator. What was the impact of these firms?

  7. These firms abdicated traditional  lending standards. They pushed option arms, interest only loans, and negative amortization mortgages, all of which defaulted in huge numbers. Was non-bank sub prime lending a major factor in the crisis?

  8. The entire world had a simultaneous global housing boom and bust. US legislation such as the CRA or Fannie & Freddie only covered US housing and lenders.  How did this cause a worldwide boom and bust — even bigger than that in the US ?

  9. Prior to the 2004, many States had Anti-Predatory Lending (APL) laws on their books (and lower defaults and foreclosure rates). In 2004, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) Federally Preempted state laws regulating mortgage credit and national banks. What was the impact of this OCC Federal Preemption ?

  10. Corporate Structure: None of the Wall Street partnerships got into trouble, only the publicly traded iBanks. Partnerships have full personal liability for their losses. What was the impact of this lack of personal liability of senior management on Wall Street risk management?

Comment:  Some of these come close to being purely rhetorical in the sense that (I suspect) Barry feels he knows the answer, and that the answer is damning to the culprits.  For every one of them, I suspect somebody over at the American Enterprise Institute will be ready with a memo showing that it was a total non-issue and oh look!  There's Barney Frank!  Even given AEIs risible record of "research," still a number of these do represent real issues on which I'd love to have a better sense of who is right.  Example: repeal of Glass Steagall is part of the standard mantra.  Yet wouldn't I be right that the worst afflicted banks (Bear Stearns, Lehman) are the ones least diversified, the ones that took least advantage of Glass Steagall repeal?  Can we document that Federal preemption really changed anything?

I know, that's not really his point--his point being to try to shame four guys who seem to have no sense of shame, and who pass on, as an "investigation report," a set of AEI talking points that they could have drafted before the commission was ever appointed.

Google foreclosure maps

Barry sez,

Google Maps keeps evolving, expanding the ability to drill down into granular detail. The latest updated trick? Mapping foreclosures for sale.

This great and terrible Google trick has been around at least since 2008 -- but it seems to have become much more robust earlier this year:

1. Punch any US address into Google Maps.

2. Your options are Earth, Satellite, Map, Traffic and . . . More. (Select "More")

3. The drop down menu gives you a check box option for "Real Estate."

4. The left column will give you several options (You may have to select "Show Options")

5. Check the box marked "Foreclosure."

I wanted to demonstrate the full extent of Foreclosures in the US, so after setting GMaps on foreclosure listings, I slowly zoomed out of the map. Voila! Most foreclosures that are for sale in the USA are now showing on your screen.
(Note: This map does not reveal any of the millions of REOs that have already been sold by the banks that hold them).

Making Money Guide

Testing, testing, always be testing. Now that the holiday season has come and gone, guess what time it is? Testing time! Some of you even have some new budget to chip away at. What better use for that money than making your PPC campaigns convert better?

First, Ads

This one is “simple” or so it seems. But think about it, how long has it been since you played with your ad text. I’ll give you a few minutes … yeah, pretty long time huh? Take some time out of your schedule each week and tackle your ad groups one by one. Get some of your co-workers involved too! Test anything and everything. You never know what might convert better until you try.

Second, Landing Pages

This is another “well duh” moment, but many people talk of testing landing pages but never get the chance. My suggestion for the New Year is to pick one landing page to start with. Look at your call to action and change it somehow. Shorten the form, move it, change the color of the call to action button, etc. Pick one thing and go to town testing. One change can get you going on a host of other changes throughout the year.

Third, Ad Extensions

They aren’t made for everyone, but ad extensions can make your ads stand out from other ads in a way that no text change can. If you are ecommerce, try adding your products to the Google Merchant center. If you have a local business, use the location extension or phone extension. Everyone can try sitelinks. Who knows when that might come in handy and convert new visitors?

Fourth, Automatic Bidding

There are a number of types of automatic bidding in AdWords nowadays. The easiest is automatic bidding for optimal budget, but the best is automatic bidding for a target cost per conversion. You really have two options for conversion bidding, one is the more general bidding to increase the number of conversions, but the best is always CPA bidding. To use both of these you’ll need to be tracking conversions in AdWords and have a few conversions under your belt to set up the option. Once it is set up though, it provides the best bidding out there for small business optimizers.

Fifth, Experiments

Experiments are my current fun toy. With Google AdWords Experiments you can try keyword changes, keyword match type changes, bidding changes and even full ad group changes. This is a brand new area that I can’t wait to test a little more in 2011 and would be a great one for any PPCer to try out … if you haven’t already mastered them that is.

Happy New Year!

It’s being reported by BGR that some Best Buys may be unable to activate new T-Mobile lines at their stores. Normally, you may think “What’s the big deal?” but it’s causing issue for those hoping to buy the new Nexus S superphone. With Best Buy unable to activate a new service line through T-Mobile, some BGR readers are reportedly having to pay the full retail contract-free price of the Nexus S ($530) in order to assure that nobody else nabs their phone. Brutal!

According to the reader, he couldn’t activate the new line in store, and after heading home, he called back and after repeated calls, they said that if he wanted to get a Nexus S, he would have to pay full retail for the phone. Now, this seems to be an isolated incident, and who knows if the guy was black listed by T-Mobile or something.

BGR reached out to Best Buy’s press relations people, who apparently didn’t respond to their questions. Have any of our readers had this issue? We’d love to find out. Tell us about it in the comments section.

To briefly recap the specs of the Nexus S, it’s not a bad phone, though it’s basically a Galaxy S with Google branding and a curved display:

  • 4-inch OLED contour display
  • 1GHZ processor
  • 512MB RAM
  • 16GB storage
  • Android 2.3
  • 5MP Camera w/ LED flash

Affiliate Making Money

or if you aim big you can even advertise with Google Adwords and pay only if someone clicks your add:http://google.com/adwords4. Consider me your real business friend and start your first link exchange with my blog: ad my link to your blog or website and I shell do the same adding your link over here on  http://realbucksonline.blogspot.com/ Also consider that I will post a new method of making real bucks online every week so stay connected here via bookmark or RSS feed.
Ok: I am just a average guy like you, who aims to make a real buck on the net.
Now let*s face it: it is hard enough to put cents on cents in a few ptc sites and expect to earn a decent living by that. Plus that all this so called business to be payed to click it*s like rolling the dice: you*re never sure finally you get the money. So what*s the catch with this game?
The most important thing in it is to get referrals : directly or rented ones. And the second important thing is to relay on the most trusted and stable sites. This is like betting on the most probable winner with a Team of Betters behind you.
Now,the first rule in business is to MEAN it. Not necessarily to be mean but to be serious about it. So if you think to make a living online you must be serious, hard working and learn it every step of the way. By all means you will get to SUCCEED IN TIME. With the second important thing, related to paying and stable sites you can get help from average experience or custom search on the net for top paying sites on Google. The really heavy duty thing is to build a Team of Referrals. According to this, the most affordable approach is to rent them with the amount of money you already earned on a site. The difficult part is to convince a direct referral to join in your   downline and be active on every day. This is like direct-sales in the real world: 50% chances (or less) to make them buy something which is more a game than a business. The rest of 50% is advertising or make believe (super-fantasizing) that something is useful and generates a sort of monthly real income. This fantasies go from promises of other great deals to even promises of 10(ten!) dollars per click:) And believe me, there are sites which ”offer” more than that, even the moon from the sky, just to get you join their scam. There are two kind of experiences related to this ”make believes”: one is to be a realistic guy by nature and the second is to try things until they prove lies. Everyone is preferring the first category except the advertisers, who are preferring the second one. Well, if you want to really be in the first category, and play this ptc game, you have to discern between a real buck and a promised one, in Neverland. You may say that each and every dime is just a promise in the ptc virtual world, until that dime profs it*s real in your pocket. It*s true but that does not mean you stop discerning reality from dreams. You must keep your goal to make real money online, gather experience and build a system that really works keeping you satisfied with your decent earnings and little, indecent losses.
That is why I thought of a system for everyone to get referrals. Scroll down and find out how much you will pay for it!
(just kidding Stay tuned on this site and you will found it soon. Have a winning day everyone!

Every day, more and more people go online to find a way to make money. Here are some ways you can exploit the power of the Internet.

Sign in with eBay – Despite the downturn in the economy, people are always very nice to the U.S. dollar on eBay. All you need do is to set up an account with them and with PayPal and both are free. Once you have done this take some time to gather all the things you already have, and no longer want or need, and begin to list them on eBay. Be sure to take good pictures and descriptions of your articles are great. Thereby significantly increasing your sales.

Learn Affiliate Marketing – Affiliate marketing is big and growing fast now. If you do not know anything about this strange way to make money, takes time to learn all this. Affiliate marketing is basically when a person is committed to promoting company products and / or services. For each sale generated from that person to receive the commission. There are many people making full time income and just affiliate marketing. Sounds crazy right? Well, actually there are millions of people around the world who earn their living in earnest with the powerful method of affiliate marketing. Could be one of them?

One of the most popular methods of making money on the internet is to purchase expired/expiring domain names and either resell them for a potential profit by selling on an auction site, creating a content site and then selling on one of the many forums or marketplaces that exist or you can even keep it and try and monetize it yourself using various methods such as ppc ads, cpa offers and affiliate product listings.

Just type in google search expired domain names and plenty of websites such as tdnam, expireddomains will appear with numerous available domain names.

Here are some of the key factors to consider before buying that potential profit making domain name

Quality Of Name : there are several key factors here, if the name is over 15 characters then this could arguably be too long. A lot of surfers search on the basis of a word or phrase so if you have www.playgolf.com versus www.learnhowtoplaybettergolf.com the first name is more likely to be useful. Also look for hyphens, numbers and the domain extension, these can all reduce the value of a name a .com and .net extension are worth a lot more than .biz or .mobi for example

Note : in some of the examples below, where required change the domainname.com to the domain name you are checking

Age : Older names are worth more than newer ones and if you plan to resell the name with no website then this should be considered. It was believed that google at one point gave higher rankings to older domain names than to newer ones.

Traffic : If you can find a domain name with traffic then that is great but be aware of the source it may be fake traffic particularly on expiring domain names that are listed for auction to bump up the price of them. Genuine traffic is great as this means visits to your new site, you tend to get this on expiring domains but not on expired domains.

History Of domain name : Check out using wayback machine what the domain was used for, was it an adult site, gambling site or other dubious source. You may find there is a reason why it is expired, perhaps it has been banned on Google Search for example. Type in the following to see what is listed at the web archive http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://domainname.com

Pagerank : Is it ranked by Google, if it is and obviously the higher the pagerank then the more valuable the domain name is. Watch out for fake page ranks. A free service to check the validity is http://www.prchecker.info/check_page_rank.php

Indexed Pages In Google : Has the Big G visited the site and indexed it, if so then this is a potential source of some traffic here. Type in the following http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=site%3domainname.com&btnG=Search

Google Searches for domain name : Is anyone using google actually looking for the website, if you have got 1000's or more then you may be on to a good thing. Type the following into google search, http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=domainname.com&btnG=Google+Search. If you remove the .com you will also get results for other domain names such as .net, .info and so on. The first example is obviously better because that is targette dat your domain name.

Open Directory Listed : www.dmoz.org used to be the pinnacle of listings, if you could get listed in there it generally meant a good source of traffic. Nowadays the value of this has lessened somewhat but a listing in here generally indicates a well established domain name and therefore can increase the value of the site. In your favorite browser type the following http://search.dmoz.org/cgi-bin/search?search=domainname.com

Google Backlinks : Find out if anyone is linking to the site, in google's search type in the following http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=link%3Awww.domainname.com&btnG=Search.

Yahoo Backlinks : Again this is similar to Google and even though Yahoo is not so highly regarded, backlinks equal potential traffic. For example I found a domain name with 10000+ backlinks listed which resulted in plenty of visits to my fledgeling site. To check this out type the following into your browser http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/advsearch?p=http%3A%2F%2Fdomainname.com&bwm=i&bwmo=d&bwmf=s.

Thats the end of Part 1, and I believe that these are the most important factors to consider, some may dispute the order. Indexed in Google being top priority for example but this is what I look at , in Part 2 we will look at other factors.

or if you aim big you can even advertise with Google Adwords and pay only if someone clicks your add:http://google.com/adwords4.
