Alt Attribute & SEO Optimization

SEO Optimization images is becoming increasingly more essential in SEO (Search Engine Optimization) for websites. The ALT attribute is really a critical step that is sometimes forgotten. This can be a lost opportunity for better rankings.

In Google's webmaster guidelines, they advise the use of alternative text for that images on your site:

Images:. Make use of the alt attribute to provide descriptive text. In addition, we recommend using a human-readable caption and descriptive text round the image.

Why would they ask us to do that? The answer is easy, really; search engines like google have the same problem as blind users. They can't begin to see the images.

Many webmasters and inexperienced or unethical SEOs abuse using this attribute, attempting to stuff it with keywords, looking to achieve a particular keyword density, which is not as relevant for rankings now since it was previously.

On the other hand, high keyword density can, on some search engines like google, trigger spam filters, which might create a penalty for the site's ranking. Even without such a penalty, your site's rankings will not take advantage of this tactic.
This method also puts persons who use screen readers in a greater disadvantage. Screen readers are software-based tools that actually read aloud the items in what's shown on the screen. In browsing the web, the alt attributes of images are read aloud as well.

Imagine listening to a paragraph of text that is then repetitions of numerous keywords. The page would be not even close to accessible, and, to put it bluntly, would be found quite annoying.
What is an Alt attribute?

An ALT attribute should not be used as a description or a label to have an image, though many people use it for the reason that fashion. Though it may appear natural to assume that alternate text is a label or a description, it is not!

What used within an image's alt attribute should be its text equivalent and convey the same information or serve exactly the same purpose the image would.

The thing would be to supply the same functional information that a visual user would see. The alt attribute text should function as a "stand in" when the look is not available. Ask yourself this: Should you replace the image using the text, would most users receive the same basic information, and wouldn't it generate the same response?
A few examples:

Some SEO Optimization Tips

If a search button is really a magnifying glass or binoculars its alt text ought to be 'search' or 'find' not 'magnifying glass' or 'binoculars'.

If the image is meant to convey the literal contents of the look, then a description is appropriate.

If it is meant to convey data, then that information is what's appropriate.

If it is designed to convey using a function, then your function is what should be used.

Some Alt Attribute Guidelines:

Always add alt attributes to images. Alt is mandatory for accessibility as well as for valid XHTML.

For images that play only a decorative role within the page, make use of an empty alt (i.e. alt="") or a CSS background image so that reading browsers do not bother users by uttering such things as "spacer image".

Keep in mind that it is the function of the image we're attempting to convey. For instance; any button images shouldn't range from the word "button" in the alt text. They should emphasize the action performed by the button.

Alt text should be determined by context. The same image in a different context may require drastically different alt text.

Attempt to flow alt text with the rest from the text because that is the way it is going to be read with adaptive technologies like screen readers. Someone hearing your page should hardly remember that a graphic image is there.
Please keep in mind that using an alt attribute for every image is needed to satisfy the minimum WAI requirements, that are used since the benchmark for accessibility laws in UK and the remainder of Europe. Also, they are necessary to meet "Section 508" accessibility requirements in america.

It is important to categorize non-text content into three levels:

Eye-Candy
Mood-Setting
Content and Function

I. Eye-Candy

Eye-Candy are stuff that serve no purpose other than to make a site visually appealing/attractive and (in many cases) satisfy the marketing departments. There isn't any content value (though there might be value to a sighted user).

Never alt-ify eye-candy unless there's something there that will boost the usability from the site for someone using a non-visual user agent. Use a null alt attribute or background images in CSS for eye-candy.

II. Mood-Setting

This is the middle layer of graphics which may actually set the mood or set the stage as it were. These graphics are not direct content and could 't be considered essential, but they are essential in that they help frame what's going on.

Attempt to alt-ify the second group as is sensible and is relevant. There may be instances when doing this may be annoying or detrimental with other users. Then avoid it.

For example; Alt text that's identical to adjacent text is unnecessary, as well as an irritant to screen reader users. I suggest alt="" or background CSS images in such instances. But sometimes, it's vital that you get this content inside for those users.

Most times this will depend on context. Exactly the same image in a different context may need drastically different alt text. Obviously, content ought to always be fully available. How you go in this example is a judgment call.

III. Content and Function

This is when the look is the actual content. Always alt-ify content and functional images. Title and long description attributes can also be so as.
The main reason many authors can't understand why their alt text isn't working is that they don't know why the pictures are there. You need to figured out exactly what function a picture serves. Think about what it is concerning the image that's vital that you the page's intended audience.

Every graphic has a reason behind standing on that page: because it either enhances the theme/ mood/ atmosphere or it is critical to what are the page is trying to explain. Understanding what the image is perfect for makes alt text simpler to write. And exercise writing them definitely helps.
A method to check the usefulness of alternative text would be to imagine reading the page on the phone to someone. What would you say when encountering a particular image to make the page understandable towards the listener?

Aside from the alt attribute you've got a couple more tools available for images.
First, in degree of descriptiveness title is in between alt and longdesc. It adds useful information and can add flavor. The title attribute is optionally rendered through the user agent. Remember they are invisible and never shown as a "tooltip" when focus is received via the keyboard. (So much for device independence). So use the title attribute just for advisory information.
Second, the longdesc attribute points towards the Link to a full description of the image. If the information found in an image is essential to the meaning of the page (i.e. some important content would be lost if the image was removed), an extended description compared to "alt" attribute can reasonably display should be used. It may offer rich, expressive documentation of the visual image.

It ought to be used when alt and title are insufficient to embody the visual qualities of an image. As Clark [1] states, "A longdesc is a long description of an image...The goal is to use any period of description essential to impart the details of the graphic.

It would not be remiss to hope that the long description conjures an image - the look - within the mind's eye, an analogy that holds true even for that totally blind."

Although the alt attribute is mandatory for web accessibility as well as for valid (X)HTML, not every images need alternative text, long descriptions, or titles.

Oftentimes, you are best just choosing your gut instinct -- if it's not essential to include it, and if you don't possess a strong urge to do it, don't include that longdesc.

However, if it's essential for the whole page to operate, then you have to include the alt text (or title or longdesc).

What's necessary and what's not depends a great deal about the function of the image and its context about the page.

The same image may require alt text (or title or longdesc) in a single spot, although not in another. If the image provides simply no content or functional information alt="" or background CSS images might be appropriate to use. But if the image provides content or adds functional information an alt would be required and maybe a long description would be so as. Oftentimes this type of thing is a judgement call.

Image Search Engine Optimization Tips

Listed below are key steps in optimizing images:

Choose a logical file name that reinforces the keywords. You should use hyphens within the file name to isolate the keyword, but avoid to exceeding two hyphens. Avoid using underscores like a word separator, like for example "brilliant-diamonds.jpg";

Label the file extension. For instance, when the image internet search engine sees a ".jpg" (JPEG) file extension, it's going to assume the file is really a photo, and if it sees a ".gif" (GIF) file extension, it's likely to assume that it is a graphic;

Make sure that the written text nearby the image that's relevant to that image.
Again, do not lose a great chance to help your site with your images searching engines. Use these steps to position better on all the engines and drive increased traffic for your site TODAY.

SEO Optimization

OwnLocal is a Y-Combinator bred startup that helps local newspapers survive on the Internet. OwnLocal swoops into small towns sprinkled across America’s less tech savvy plains and puts on quite a clever show. In no way are they grifters; but with their guaranteed promises of success, small town publishers don’t stand a chance.

Lloyd W. Armbrust, II, OwnLocal’s Founder and CEO, puts its technology in the hands of local publications, newspapers or television stations, so that they can then sell successful modern digital strategies like owning a website, blogging, SEO optimization, design, group deals and more to local businesses. In other words, OwnLocal acts like a web development department for local newspapers providing them with simple, sellable products including a white label daily deal product and a white label Yelp-like product.

“In rural America, small businesses would rather the Internet didn’t exist, but it does. We sell a package through their local newspapers that creates a website for them, writes relevant blog posts for them and pushes out media to Twitter and Facebook. So, we manage all of that for them but we do it through their newspaper.”

-Lloyd W. Armbrust

OwnLocal trains local media employees and shows them how to put on a “Web a la carte” presentation for small businesses even though the local businesses may have never heard of Groupon, Yelp or LivingSocial. To date, OwnLocal has powered more than 1,000 small businesses and over 100 publications.

OwnLocal also sells its product, “AdForge” as “the best print-to-digital ad conversion software in the world.” AdForge is designed to take print ads and put them on the web, on mobile and on tablets. AdForge easily converts print ads into clickable, shareable, printable, mappable and sendable digital ads.

Say you’re a lawyer or a plumber, OwnLocal will create websites optimized for search engines and deal with social media elements like blogging, tweeting and Facebooking, saving these small service businesses a lot of time and effort. Businesses can choose from a variety of different websites from simple splash pages to editable, manageable sites. OwnLocal then taps into its network of college students and stay at home moms to write the company’s blog posts. But again, all of this is through the local newspaper.

Today, OwnLocal announces its “Arcade” partnership with HeyZap, another YC startup, to bring more than 50,000 social and casual games to newspapers and local media. Rather than just having a few puzzle games like crosswords and Sudoku, newspapers will have access to games that reflect what their audiences have come to expect from social networks and social game sites. Initial launch partners include A.H. Belo Corp.‘s The Press-Enterprise and Impre Media, the largest Spanish language newspaper group in America as well as 25 other newspapers. OwnLocal expects that newspapers will see financial benefits, increased time-on-site and more return visits.

In York, Nebraska– a town with a population of 10,000– OwnLocal made The York News Times $140,000 last year. OwnLocal takes 30% and the newspaper gets the remaining 70% of revenues from its tech products sold. $100,000-300,000 is an easy number to make for local papers, says Armbrust.  OwnLocal doesn’t work with media outlets that have circulations less than 1,000. And its sophisticated system tell them exactly how much money they can make just from circulation numbers. Guaranteed revenue reports based on circulation for dying newspapers? Maybe dreams do come true.

“The community newspaper I worked at was purchased and sold to Gatehouse Media. I started thinking, what can we do? Is there a situation where you can make this product that’s all-encompassing that could make these newspapers money? I felt for these guys. Print is declining.”

–Lloyd Armbrust

Armbrust has worked in the newspaper industry for 11 years, including two years working on OwnLocal. His Co-Founder Jason Novack is the hardcore hacker in the pair. Armbrust says their main competitor, ReachLocal charges 5 times as much as OwnLocal because they utilize a network of 1,000 local sales reps.

To date, OwnLocal has received just under a million seed funding from Y Combinator, Baseline Ventures, Lerer Media Ventures, Paul Buchheit, Joshua Schachter and Alex Moore.

Last week, I was on a panel at a CTIA pre-conference show in Orlando, and a question that was asked during several sessions at the conference was “what should we invest in: a mobile site or a mobile app?”

I heard this same question in a panel I was on at Digiday Mobile in September 2010, and earlier at the Mobile Search App Opportunities session at SMX West 2010, so it’s clear that this is still a question that marketers and developers are still struggling with, and have been since the opening of Apple’s App Store in 2008.

If you’re lucky enough not to be familiar with the question, brands with limited resources often wonder whether they really need to build both a mobile site and a mobile app, and would prefer to funnel their limited resources into one fully-funded mobile project.

Mobile apps have historically been seen by web designers as the only way to provide a rich user experience in mobile, and they are recommended frequently by CEOs who have been impressed by the user experience of an app and then fast-tracked their own mobile app project.

Why are companies still struggling with this issue after three years of talking about it? I think that’s because it’s a complex issue with more than one right answer depending on your business goals and objectives.

Add to that the countless partisan debates between those who want to sell you a mobile app and those who want to sell you a mobile site and it can be difficult to get to some semblance of truth about what it actually makes sense for your business to invest in.

As an SEO, I’m not selling mobile apps or mobile sites, and I can help you optimize either for more qualified traffic in search, but I’ve seen enough to know that the strongest mobile strategies start with a mobile web site and use it as the foundation for success.

Consider the following problems inherent with betting the farm on a mobile app:

  • The most successful iPhone app project, which becomes viral enough to be passed around to every user on the platform, would only ultimately reach only 7% of the total mobile market. A mobile website or mobile web app, on the other hand, has the potential to reach 100% of mobile web users.

  • Many iPhone apps require the current version of iOS to run, which can’t be run by first-generation iPod touches. According to Chitika research, these devices account for almost 10% of iPhone traffic, which could lower your reach even more. Android devices are even more fragmented, and could require additional development time to make your applications accessible to the already-limited app market. Mobile websites and web apps built with a progressive enhancement strategy, however, should be accessible to most users regardless of device.

  • It’s a myth that users prefer a mobile app experience, largely propagated, I suspect, by those who are looking to sell additional services. Research shows that most users, in fact, prefer mobile websites over mobile apps (Adobe, eMarketer, InsightExpress), and that more people use mobile websites than apps.

  • Users of search engines will likely not find your app in Google or Bing unless they’re looking for it. You can optimize the app for app stores and to some extent for Google, but it’s a different process that requires some specialized knowledge for success. As of this writing, it’s highly unlikely that searchers will find your app when searching on high volume, competitive keywords in search engines outside of app stores unless you buy a search ad. Given that 21.4% of mobile users in the United States search on their phones, a brand that wants the content it creates to find an audience would be wise not to ignore traffic from mobile search.

  • Most apps are downloaded once and discarded (Pinch Media, Localytics). If you don’t have a good reason for creating your app and don’t ultimately succeed in creating an app that people need to use regularly, it’s likely that your app will suffer the same fate.

  • There are very few apps that exist that provide something beyond what a mobile web site can do. If you’re creating a game or an application that truly cannot exist on the mobile web as it exists today, then by all means, build an app. However, given that Safari now has support for accelerometer and gyrometer, there are many things that mobile websites can do now that they couldn’t do previously. Be sure that you can’t build your mobile app as a web app before you build it, as there’s a good chance that you could build something similar with greater reach and engagement.

  • Apps drive link equity to iTunes, Android Market, or Blackberry App World, and not to your website, which needs it to help your other content be found in search results. Even mobile websites at m.subdomains ultimately benefit the host domain, which could help you generate more revenue on your desktop, tablet and mobile websites if they’re hosted at the same domain.

  • Apps are software. As such, they’re not currently able to be crawled and indexed as individual pages with a separate theme. It’s likely that you will index and rank one or two mobile applications pages for navigational keywords for apps, but you have the potential to rank as many pages as you have accessible pages with web apps. If your app is relevant to more than one concept or audience, building it as an accessible, open web app instead of a native application will give you greater relevance and reach.

There are good reasons for creating native apps as well, so I don’t want to make it seem as though creating a mobile website is all any business needs to reach its mobile target. For example, if you build a mobile website and not an app, you run the risk of alienating your brand from the audience that does prefer mobile apps and uses them regularly.

That audience, though, is the minority target; and if you only have funds to build one experience—mobile web or native mobile app—my recommendation is to build the best mobile web app you can afford, market it as aggressively as possible, and use the money you make and the data you collect to experiment with native apps.

If you can afford it, of course, the best solution is to build both a mobile site and a mobile app, and to enjoy not having to answer this question of limited resources that many businesses are struggling with today.

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak said in an interview this week that he would consider returning to an active role at the company he helped start if asked.

During an interview in England this week, Wozniak said, "I'd consider it, yeah," when asked whether he would play a more active role if asked, Reuters reports.

Wozniak, Steve Jobs and Ronald Wayne founded Apple Computer in 1976. Wozniak left his full-time role with the company in 1987, but remains an employee and shareholder of Apple.

Since leaving Apple, Wozniak has been involved in a wide range of entrepreneurial and philanthropic endeavors. He currently serves as Chief Scientist for storage company Fusion-io.

Meanwhile, Jobs is currently taking an indefinite leave of absence to focus on his health, though he remains CEO of Apple and continues to be involved in strategic decisions.

Wozniak, who has widely been acknowledged as the technical genius behind Apple's early success, believes that he has a lot to offer the company he helped start, which went on to become the world's second-largest company in terms of market value.

"There's just an awful lot I know about Apple products and competing products that has some relevance, some meaning. They're my own feelings, though," Wozniak said during the interview.

When asked his opinion on Apple today, Wozniak praised the company for its track record with recent products. "Unbelievable," he said, "The products, one after another, quality and hits."

Even so, Wozniak admitted that he'd prefer Apple's devices to be more open, so he can "get in there and add [his] own touches." Last December, Wozniak revealed that he had purchased a DIY kit for the iPhone 4 and "modded" the device into the as-yet-unreleased white version.

"My thinking is that Apple could be more open and not lose sales," said Wozniak, while adding, "I'm sure they're making the right decisions for the right reasons for Apple."

Wozniak has been committed to openness since the beginning. In December, Wozniak told reporters that he didn't design the original Apple I to make a lot of money and had given the designs away for free after his former employer HP showed no interest in the computer.

If the players win the fans lose. I see it as if the players win, the price continues to climb out of control, making ever seeing a game life at the stadium impossible to justify with the economy the way it is. Although I don't believe the owners care about lowering prices to allow the medium income family, but at least the need to raise prices isn't there. Direct TV has climbed to over $300 to watch your favorite teams. So, why they argue about the 9 billion we give them a year, we have to set back and wait to see how there going to pay for all this by emptying our pockets, while we thank them for agreeing on the terms.

During today’s Google earnings call, one analyst asked for some color on Google’s mobile business. CFO Patrick Pichette didn’t give much more in terms of specifics, but he did offer up some color. “Without any radical effort, we already announced at end of Q3 this is a $1 billion run-rate business,” says Pichette. Mobile is “growing at an amazing blazingly pace,” he says. “We tripped into $1 billion.”

Mobile search is definitely something Google is keenly focussed on. Senior VP of Local Jeff Huber noted on the call: ” In terms of where it trends over time, the smartphone is becoming an extension of the person, and how they do everything.”

Google is tackling that opportunity with mobile search obviously, but also with Android, which comes with Google search built-in as the default. Google is seeing 350,000 Android devices being activated a day.

Asked whether Google would have to build out a local salesforce with feet on the ground to take advantage of the new mobile and local advertising opportunities, sales chief Nikesh Arora didn’t rule out any possibilities. “we will use a combination of existing sales teams and methods and others that might be required,” he responded. Sounds like Google is picking itself up and going after the next billion dollars or two in mobile search.

Roofing Contractors Vancouver - 5 Inquiries to Ask yourself

Roofing Vancouver - Frequently Asked Questions

1. Repair or Replace?

There's no opinion as an expert opinion. Most contractors provides you with a free estimate. Get a list of a couple trusted contractors and phone them well in advance of when you want to get your homes roof fixed so you can compare costs and opinions.

2. Beauty versus Practicality?

Discuss this with your spouse or partner. (The kids could care less...at least the children.) Truth is, nobody wants an ugly roof the same as nobody wants to be seen with bed hair. If you've got a great quality roof and you just need to do the repair, it's worth it to pay for the cost of the initial shingle rather than doing patchwork. A roof replacement doesn't happen frequently (we hope!) and so make a decision that best suits you and your loved ones well or it'll stick out like a sore thumb everyday you go home.

3. Must i replace the rooftop in order to sell the house for more?

Consider this cautiously before making a choice. With respect to the roofing material you select, a new roof lasts between twenty, fifty, to one-hundred years! This means you need to check the year from the roof that's currently too deep first. Are you at year 18 of the 20-year warranted roof or year 30 of a 50-year warranted roof? Obviously, the standard is what makes the roof last longer, but when you're not likely to stay in your present home for the rest of your life, the larger expense might not be worth neglect the. Although a new roof can enhance the value of your selling price, the increase might not be enough to pay for your investment and that's definitely going to hurt your wallet.

4. Is it advisable that i can repair the roof myself?

Sure it is. Before you need to do, consult an expert first. You can do it yourself, however, you shouldn't be a complete ‘lone ranger.' Depending on the extent of your repair, you may or might not change your mind. Either way, it will help to get a professional eye about the problem first and perhaps even a free quote to help you do the math later and find out if it's truly worth your time, sweat, and money to become mister or miss fix-it.

5. Just when was a good time to find the roof replaced?

Weather can cause delays from days to weeks. Most people plan ahead to have their roof replaced in the summertime once they have a friend is going to be home throughout the day for a solid fourteen days. Once you have this period in your mind, make a call to a trusted contractor months in advance to get a quote. Some companies get booked up fast and odds are, they're probably the most reputable. Planning ahead of the summer also gives you time for you to discuss with many compare costs...especially if you need to have the roof done by a specified date.

What is Difference Between Commercial Roofing Companies From Residential Roofing Companies

If you are hiring a roofing company to re roof your house or building then you may be wondering what the differences are between residential roofing companies and commercial roofing companies. To begin with, the main one big difference is that often times an industrial roofing company might have signed a contract with and become obligated to some roofing union in in a position to work on union commercial jobs.

If this is the situation then their labor costs will prohibit them from working on non union residential jobs. Beyond that, if a commercial roofing company hasn't signed a contract having a union they might be outfitted just for commercial jobs and that means that their workers and equipment might not be in line with smaller residential jobs.

Residential roofing contractors in general often run smaller companies and therefore, are more capable of bid competitively on residential jobs, which are usually smaller than comercial jobs. In fact, quite often residential roofing contractors will run one man operations, in which the contractor that you talk to could be the one that actually does the work on the building.

Also, liability insurance for commercial roofing is more epensive along with a larger bond is required for any commercial roofing work which will make it not economical for any commercial roofer to complete residential roofing jobs.

Still one more factor is the fact that commercial jobs can run on a tighter time frame for just about any number of reasons, requiring an industrial contractor to employ a larger crew or crews which again makes smaller jobs less profitable on their behalf.

Difference Between Commercial Roofing and Residential Roofing

Are you aware that the roof of a house or building has a huge impact on the whole structure itself? Damage caused to roofs because of natural or another disasters leads to a considerable lack of property everywhere. The kind of materials used to construct the roof that ought to be sturdy and long-lasting, the way in which the roof has been installed and even its timely maintenance are extremely crucial. There's two kinds of roofs which are used on all the buildings that people see around us: commercial and residential. Even though it might seem that commercial roofing is performed only for businesses or offices and residential roofing is performed for apartments and houses, the truth is the differences tend to be more complex than that.

Residential Roofing by jpignanello

Residential roofing is usually completed just by one hired contractor but commercial roofing typically takes a whole team to complete the task. This is because an industrial roof tends to be larger when it comes to sq ft than the usual residential roof.
Commercial roofs need to be made carefully keeping the character and reason for the building in your mind. For example, when there is a restaurant within the building then external components like ventilation systems, smoke stacks and pipes is going to be required. Residential roofs tend not to have such components other than a chimney or two at most.
Commercial roofs is commonly flat in design to accommodate further changes in a later period, whereas most residential roofs have peaks and other architectural features like roof gardens.
Commercial roofing is much more expensive than residential roofing because of the special tools, materials and safety equipment that are needed onsite. Usually the patching or maintenance jobs are done in segments unlike for a residential roof where the repair or replacement work could be completed in a short time. This is another reason why the equipment employed for residential roofs is often smaller and less expensive as well.
Commercial roof installations take a extended period to complete compared to residential roof installations and are usually constructed in large sections. During this phase however, you should make sure that there are no leakages, cracks or other visible deterioration signs as it can certainly cause considerable damage to the entire building.
It is important to install the right roof for any building based on its purpose. Make sure that you hire a construction company that uses top notch materials and it has the right equipment for the job or neglect the may turn to be considered a huge loss later.

And also "proper" websites with your own personal domain name failed to achieve visibility on the list of proliferating sites in millions.

These would not have mattered, aside from something. It had been Google that provided the bread and butter for your millions of small enterprises that may not afford expensive marketing campaigns. If the site was one of the top few sites the appeared before a searcher's eyes when that individual looked for your product or service, you got hundreds as well as 1000s of visitors, many of whom even bought your product or service.

Search results specialists "reverse-engineered" to spot the factors that Google consider for showing websites at the top of its search engine results pages. These factors were then consciously integrated into your internet pages with the aspiration that Google will show your internet site one of the primary ten results it showed around the first page.

As more and more of the competitors adopted search engine marketing practices, things became difficult again. Your situation begun to slip if your competitors did the SEO better. SEO battles became serious fights with every dirty trick working.

There was "black hat" SEO practitioners who showed one page to search engines and another to human visitors. As search engines are not bothered with readability, you can fill the "search engine" page with pure gibberish, but gibberish developed in a way that the engine dutifully indexed high.

A war of wits followed between unscrupulous SEO practitioners and appearance engines. Google changed its ranking algorithms regularly to work around practices that allowed low value content to appear towards the top of its search results. After all, Google's success depended on providing value to searchers, not merchants. And SEO practitioners came up with new tricks.

'Counter-Terror' Policy Targets Uyghurs

2011-04-07
A new report says China uses the threat of terrorism to crack down on Uyghurs in Xinjiang.

AFP
Uyghur men and women chat outside a mosque in Urumqi, July 17, 2009.

China's anti-terrorism policy deliberately targets ethnic minority communities such as Uyghurs and Tibetans struggling for greater autonomy, according to a white paper by a rights group.

The policy equates terrorism with groups pushing for more self-governing rights, is too broad in scope, and shirks international human rights commitments, said the Hong Kong and New York-based Human Rights in China (HRIC).

The paper looked into human rights concerns within the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), a regional intergovernmental organization which includes China and five other member states-Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan-with a total population of 1.5 billion people.

It said the SCO approach to counter-terrorism, modeled on China'sThree Evils doctrine, and highlighting principles of territorial integrity, noninterference in internal affairs, and social stability, contributes to supporting repressive regimes at the expense of human rights.

A failure to demand accountability from the SCO undermines the effectiveness and integrity of the international system in countering terrorism and advancing rule of law, peace, and security, HRIC said.

"China's approach to counter-terrorism is the Three Evils doctrine, and it links terrorism with separatism and extremism," HRIC director Sharon Hom said in an interview.

"This Three Evils approach is overbroad, highly politicized, and while not exclusively applied only to ethnic minority groups, it is regularly applied to Uyghurs and Tibetans in its practice."

Hom said other SCO member states follow China's lead by recognizing Xinjiang and Tibet as inalienable territories of China and repatriating its ethnic minorities who seek asylum within their borders.

"China has enormous clout in the SCO, and you can also see it in the ways in which the other SCO member states and the SCO will completely parrot China's line and China's policy on these two so-called autonomous regions."

Treatment of Uyghurs

The HRIC white paper said it found "serious issues" concerning China's treatment of Uyghurs, including the principle of non-refoulement and potential use of torture during interrogations.

Regulations specific to Xinjiang became part of China's domestic counter-terrorism legal framework in December 2009 when provincial-level lawmakers revised the region's Comprehensive Management of Social Order.

Through the revisions, Chinese authorities were ordered to specifically crack down on the three threats of "terrorism, separatism, and extremism" in the aftermath of the July 2009 ethnic violence in Urumqi which left hundreds dead, according to official media reports.

HRIC called the amendments "unique" to Xinjiang, adding that "such singular focus by the Chinese government ... suggests that the concept of terrorism has been applied in a biased fashion, with the Uyghur community the subject of intense scrutiny and suspicion."

It noted that while China does face real threats of terrorism, "the limited involvement of Uyghurs in terrorist acts cannot serve as justification of widespread repression throughout [Xinjiang] or the labeling of peaceful Uyghur activists under the rubric of the Three Evils."

Adherence to rules

But despite its reliance on the Three Evils doctrine, HRIC wrote, China continues to claim that it is acting to "firmly uphold and fulfill the resolutions of the United Nations General Assembly and the Security Council," according to a statement by the Chinese Ministry of Public Security (MPS).

Under U.N. rules, China pledged to oppose the "arbitrary widening" of the scope of fighting terrorism and identifying terrorism with any specific ethnic group or religion.

"The Three Evils doctrine undermines this principled approach and, in doing so, compromises human rights guaranteed under international law, and international counter-terrorism efforts as a whole," HRIC said.

HRIC recommended that Beijing narrow its "Three Evils"-based approach to national security and reformulate its definition of terrorism.

On June 24 last year, Chinese authorities announced they had broken up a "terrorist" ring of a Uyghur separatist group, the East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM), after arresting more than ten of its members involved in an alleged major plot against China.

The announcement said that information leading to the arrest had been obtained through the investigation of 20 "individuals of Chinese citizenship" who had been deported to China on December 20, 2009-the exact date that Cambodia deported 20 Uyghurs seeking asylum following the July 5 ethnic unrest in Urumqi.

The statement also indicated that several of the alleged ETIM members had confessed to participating in a wide array of terrorist activities during interrogation.

Human Rights Watch said in February that the Cambodian government has a "dismal track record" of deporting refugees granted asylum status by the UNHCR, particularly those from neighboring countries such as China and Vietnam.

Ethnic tensions

Millions of Uyghurs-a distinct, Turkic minority who are predominantly Muslim-populate Central Asia and the Xinjiang region.

Ethnic tensions between Uyghurs and majority Han Chinese settlers have simmered for years, and erupted in riots in July 2009 that left some 200 people dead, according to the Chinese government's tally.

Uyghurs say they have long suffered ethnic discrimination, oppressive religious controls, and continued poverty and joblessness despite China's ambitious plans to develop its vast northwestern frontier.

Chinese authorities blame Uyghur separatists for a series of deadly attacks in recent years and accuse one group in particular of maintaining links to the al-Qaeda terrorist network.

Roofing West Vancouver Issues

Vancouver Roofing

Within Vancouver special care is needed whenever obtaining a estimate for a house. The roofing contractor in Vancouver must know exactly what they're dealing with when getting your roof away. Unexpected costs really are a common scenario within Vancouver and each owner should be prepared

Heritage- being one of the earliest places within the GVRD you can realize that there are some fairly aged houses. Having a steep pitch roofing, most likely near 12/12 pitch that essentially means Forty five diploma position roof. The original roofing was cedar shake sitting on taping. I don't know if it was being laid back or the norm, in the event that everyone was trying to cut costs but if you've this roofing you probably got more than one coating on the top. The original continues to be on and 2 additional levels sit down over the actual cedar tremble. I've come across home exactly where 5 layers sat on top of the home. Based on creating signal nowadays a Vancouver Roofing contractor must remove all layers if your new roofing will be placed above. You people often spend much more because of the steepness, the couple of levels of roof, the plywood outdoor patio and also the trouble. You are probably two feet from your neighbours

Roofing Vancouver

Low Downward slope - Vancouver special homes operate all through East Vancouver. The slight problem with these houses in regards to roof covering is that fewer and fewer roof covering companies available perform tar and gravel. The option you've is actually flashlight upon or metal. Asphalt tiles cannot go on these types of homes. Your pitch would be to low as well as asphalt most likely would not final 10 years. Vancouver Roofing contractors that have been in the commercial associated with flashlight on in excess of 10 years are probably dependable. Ice and snow build up on these roofs cause mini pools to build up on your roof as well as cause main leaking, always keep the actual rain gutters as well as downpipes clear.

Reduced Slope or even Steep Slope cedar shake -- Within Vancouver this really is common about the Western aspect. There isn't a lot to say about Cedar in Vancouver. There was a long time period through the 60's, 1970's and Eighties when Vancouver Roofing businesses weren't setting up cedar. The majority of Cedar roofs are new construction. cedar may be the 1 product that the majority of problems can be determined before the work begins

Low Downward slope or even High Slope Asphalt roofing -- If you have asphalt roofing and it hasn't been changed in the last ten years then you've a solid deck. Since the 1970's asphalt arrived to the market. Along with new construction shiplap or even also known as tongue and dance had been the only real option of the solid deck. Shiplap techniques a great deal during the cold months as well as in summer time therefore plyboard ought to be split lower through the roofer

Roofing within Burnaby

Roof covering within Burnaby might have it's problems and also the best way to go through them all is to function through North in order to Southern starting at the very top of Burnaby. In Northern Burnaby the hillsides start to slope and decrease with a pretty strong angles. The big challenges I've found listed here are front yard steepness as well as use of the house, even though this might not seem like the problem to you it's a really major problem for a roofing company that has at hand have your old roof up a slope and hands have your brand-new roofing lower the slope.

The hard, the slope area in this region kept creating contractors away and for that reason you have homes that were all built by individually employed construction companies. There are some servings associated with Northern Burnaby which have small groups homes just about all built collectively but as far as which Main Burnaby has. North Burnaby has more interesting built designs and rooftops making a ball park figure estimate in this area pretty difficult.

Roofing Burnaby

Central Burnaby is where big building businesses with a regular new way of building the home was pretty busy throughout the 70`s as well as earlier 80`s. With a shiplap deck becoming the only real option as well as asphalt shingles becoming the option and placed on a home. Today shiplap is the roofers enemy because of the fact that the shingles nowadays are not designed to work with shiplap. Trying to convince main Burnaby they need to re-deck the rooftop with plyboard has frequently been ignored and even for good reason.

The caliber of shiplap has elevated levels of this particular region with many of it that I know of being between Six and 8 inches that is ideal. Apart from that this part of Burnaby is fairly simple to roofing in with entry not being a problem everything frequently along with a clear style within sloped roof that's clear to see. A lot of Vancouver special offers focused here to with flashlight on being the main choice in the original tar as well as tiny rocks choice. Cedar rooftops tend to sprinkle the actual east aspect of the area with many transforming to asphalt

South Burnaby tends to have much larger roofs that are scattered along with asphalt as well as cedar shake. Cedar tremble rooftops in this area are usually through homes close to 20 years old. This particular house has a tendency to convert right into a asphalt roofing and many have okay access however, many do not and also the rooftops are not everything to steep. Some asphalt roofs down right here actually have plywood patio's which is usually a big saving idea for just about any property owner

Roofing West Vancouver

West Vancouver is a region of valley's and ridges, steep driveways and concealed rooftops. This is often a roofers headache however you will find roofing companies who are employed in the area and know what these people most likely could be dealing with. In contrast to other cities within the Metro Vancouver area, large building companies did not purchase big monitors associated with land and build patterned suv cul-de-sacs. They are doing exist but to a smaller diploma compared to additional metropolitan areas. As a result you'll find in a single road 20 houses all constructed in a different way. I guess due to the property landscape this was the only method to obtain homes built-in a few regions.

There is definitely the growth during the 1970's through the shear quantity of shiplap decks available. Most roofs within West Vancouver that require a replacement are asphalt rooftops that take a seat on the shiplap deck. These people shingle is normally the lock shingle that was designed for shiplap but no more available in the Greater Vancouver area. The majority of property owners within West Vancouver tend to be learning they right now require a plyboard deck to cover the shiplap.

Before - Cedar Shingle Roof (Senae) by Interlock Roofing

A few Cedar roofs appear in West Vancouver but not a lot that requires replacing. The majority of twenty year old cedar shake roofs in West Vancouver have been changed which means you find a cedar roof here and there. Replacing cedar along with cedar is not a just about all to typical practise and most Cedar rooftops have been in brand new construction.

Roofing West Vancouver

Vancouver special offers are not all to common within West Vancouver. Torch upon and tar as well as gravel is available but not suggested. The actual rain as well as wind is commonly a bit more extreme in West Vancouver, using the high amount associated with trees and the chance of a heavy snowfall drop metal is a high recommendation.

Getting a roof estimate in West Vancouver can be very diverse from the individual living right next door. for those who have the steep front yard, have a roof that's steeper than Thirty degrees and over 2000 sq ft compared to you can pay a lot more than $ 3000 than your own neighbour. The type of roofing as well as quantity of flashing can produce a huge difference. Within West Vancouver it is very tough to golf ball park a price for this very reason. I suppose you could say in line with the little land you live on and also the design of the roof could make a big difference between a higher estimation and a reduced estimation. Roof entry is a huge issue with a few roofers having to hands carry the old roof over 100 feet than hand carrying the brand new roofing a hundred feet to the house.

Obtain 3 estimates to check apples with celery and for the same item, provides you with a chance to educate yourself and ask the best concerns. The majority of rooftops within West Vancouver is under ventilated so make certain when you are getting your roof estimate you can observe in the event that each and every estimation you get may upgrade your ventilation or even your new roof will not last. The extra air flow isn't the add-on price so the more the actual merrier, you cannot possess a limit on ventilation. Tree particles is a issue therefore maintain your roofing with no damage the rooftop item. leak blower is probably the greatest type of maintenance.
